AVATAR review

After many months of waiting, today was the day we finally visited Pandora. And what a wonderful trip it was!

James Cameron's first fiction film since Titanic is a unique cinematic experience. Cameron (with the help of many talented people who deserve just as much credit) has managed to create a world so rich and full of details that you can't help but get lost in it for the 160 minutes of Avatar's runtime.

The first 15-20 of those minutes are a bit tricky because that's how long it will take your brain to a) get used to the 3D and b) be convinced that those tall blue people are real! After that you just get immersed to the incredible jungles of Pandora marvelling at the images that pass before your eyes.

"You'll believe people are blue!"

This of course does not mean that the movie is perfect. Anyone who has watched the trailer (or any movie with Indians/natives being oppressed by white people) pretty much knows the story from start to finish. A little originality would be welcomed here, but at least the story (although clichéd) is well executed so it didn't bother me that much as I was watching it.

James Cameron is back and he is in top form. Follow him to a theatre (preferably 3D, IMAX 3D even better!) and you're in for a hell of a ride!

Avatar preview

As any good geek out there today we went to see the 15 minute preview of Jame Cameron's new film Project Avatar. After a brief hailing from the big man himself the preview started and took us slowly from a 3d real world to a stereoscopic 3d magical alien jungle world with the most vivid colours imaginable. I was very impressed by the use of technology especially when it comes into sucking you into the world through the creation of the right images and atmosphere.

In the first Jungle scene with the female feline warrior I had a flashback. The flashback took me back to a 1996 excellent RPG called Albion. I am positevely, absolutely sure that the initial idea behind the world of Avatar comes from this RPG. It takes place in an Alien Jungle world where the hero, a human, arrives from a world of technology to find an alien world full of vidid colours and a feline society that is living in harmony with nature and the rest of the creatures.
Paint the cats blue and you have Avatar

The return of good science fiction films

Tired of stupid science fiction films which are nothing more than explosions and meaningles effects? Then you might want to check out the following three films which are a return to good science fiction:

MOON

District 9

Harry Knowles review (Ain't It Cool News)
Devin Faraci review (CHUD)

AVATAR

Sadly there is no trailer yet. But I'm going to say just two things:

James Cameron. Science fiction film.

That's all you need to know really. Listen to the man himself talk about AVATAR at Comic Con after screening, for the first time ever, 24 minutes of footage from the film.

I really hope that these three films will mark the beginning of a new, better era for science fiction films.
